Shop safely on the internet
Don’t fall victim to computer crime. Here are some precautions to take before you part with your money over the internet.
Buy only from sites that you can trust. A retailer’s site should display full contact details including a geographical mailing address and landline telephone number.
Check that any extra costs such as VAT, postage and packing, shipping or duty are clearly displayed. Otherwise your purchase might turn out to be not such a bargain after all.
For UK purchases over £100 for a single item, it might be safer to use your credit card rather than a debit card. If the product turns out to be defective, you might be able to claim redress from the credit card company under the Consumer Credit Act.
When paying for goods online, never disclose your PIN number. If you are asked for it, loud warning bells should ring, and you should notify your bank. No reputable body, not even the police or your banking institution, will ever request your PIN number over the internet.
On the web page where you are asked to enter your payment details, the web address should start https:// with the s standing for secure. Also, check that there is a small padlock icon at the bottom of your screen. The internet address next to the padlock should be the same as the root of the address in the bar at the top of your screen.
After your purchase, print out a copy of the order. You should always receive an emailed order acknowledgement as well. Check on your bank statement that the correct amount has been debited.
Remember – you have the same contractual rights as a purchaser over the internet as anywhere else.
